Paul Delay Band - The Last Of The Best

June 29th, 2009

"Good thing"

These new live recordings by the Paul deLay Band capture the Northwest harmonica legend at the peak of his power as a live performer, and a great band at the top of its game.
Released only weeks after deLay's untimely death at age 55, the CD features 15 tracks from three different venues: the Untapped Blues Festival and the Sunbanks Festival in 2004, and a sold-out concert at Seattle's Triple Door in 2006, where the band earned several standing ovations.
The Last Of The Best is the first live CD by the Paul deLay Band, which has toured from Canada to Mexico, and from Alaska to Mississippi. And since the final version of the band never made it to the studio, it's the only record of their remarkable work together.

Paul deLay sings several of his own hits, but devotes himself mainly to his beloved "classics" here, such as St. Louis Jimmy's "Can't Stand Your Evil Ways." DeLay resurrects Chris Kenner's neglected masterpiece, "Life Is Just A Struggle," and succeeds in making Muddy Waters' seldom-heard "Look What You've Done" absolutely his own.
Co-frontman and piano player David Vest sings lead on four titles, including "Try Not To Kill Me," the house-wrecking closer, and "Life's Highway," a tribute to Big Walter the Thunderbird.
Chicago-born Peter Dammann, the band's longtime lead guitarist, Dave Kahl (bass) and Jeff Minnick (drums) contribute inspired performances. Paul deLay was a unique artist, and this is a special band.

The Mermen - Krill Slippin’

June 29th, 2009

"Ocean beach"

"Krill Slippin' was the first album project by the San Francisco Bay area surf group The Mermen, and features dual guitar parts and lush reverbs in a modern update of traditional surf rock. The opening track "Ocean Beach" starts the CD off with a bang, while other highlights such as "Big Day At The Bay" and "Neptune's Revenge" portend to some ot the great Mermen music that would follow on later albums. Dark and ominous tracks such as "The Whales" give a different flavor to the material, but guitar fans will love the tone and twang emanating from the riffs delivered from Jim Thomas' axe. Overall, well-crafted, yet minimalistic arrangements that compliment the Mermen's other recorded material quite nicely."

Uncle Monk - Uncle Monk

June 29th, 2009

"Round the bend"

Uncle Monk is an alt-country progressive bluegrass duo featuring Tommy Ramone on vocals, mandolin, guitar, banjo and dobro, and Claudia Tienan on vocals, guitar and bass. Uncle Monk's music is rooted in old-time and bluegrass influences. To this mix they have added unique musical textures to create a sound with a new sensibility.

Tommy Ramone began his musical career as Tom Erdelyi an engineer at the Record Plant recording studios. In the musical doldrums of the 70's he, along with the great Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee Ramone, formed the rock group Ramones and participated in the birth of New Wave, Punk Rock, and Alternative music. As manager, producer and drummer for the band, Tommy Ramone helped create the sound, style and ideology for what was to become modern rock. Claudia Tienan, formerly with the group The Simplistics, is a partner with Tommy Ramone in Uncle Monk. Her penetrating lyrics and haunting vocals add facets and dimension to the songs. The music of the two artist complement each other. There is a Yin and Yang sensibility at work, a touch of light and dark, of bitter and sweet.
